Course Overview

Want to learn more about your 4-Wheel Drive SUV, SUT or truck? Want to improve your off-road driving skills? Interested in keeping you and your loved ones safe while off-roading? Off-Road Teach & Tour Adventures will safely teach you in one day what it takes most people years and years to learn on their own.

Our courses are more than education - they're ADVENTURES! While you learn how to safely operate your vehicle off-road, you will be given a personalized tour of the area. You'll learn some history, geology, biology and lore. Most of all you'll experience the fun and adventure off-road driving. Offroad Teach & Tour Adventures makes it easy to turn your 4-Wheel Drive training into a vacation!

Discovery Course Specifics

Course Goal

The goal of this course is to begin you on a path to safely and ecologically off-road alone. Although it is always best to off-road with other vehicles, this is not always possible or desired. Upon completion of this course you begin to understand the limitations of your vehicle and your driving skills allowing you to intelligently choose excursions and trails to match your capabilities.

Prerequisite

None (Except a desire to learn and have FUN!)

Length of Course

Two days. NOTE: Depending on the length of the particular tour provided with the course, the objectives may be spread over more days.

Target Audience

All inexperienced off-road drivers that want to learn the basics of four-wheeling in relative safety and comfort. This course is for the owners of any new or used 4-Wheel Drive SUV, SUT or trucks (e.g., Jeeps, Explorers, Hummers, Land Rovers, Xterras, Land Cruisers, Pathfinders, Toyota trucks, etc.). Even inexperienced owners of highly modified off-road vehicles are welcome at this course. The curriculum is primarily designed for novice off-road drivers owning stock or slightly modified 4-Wheel Drive vehicles. During this course, you'll learn how to off-road on your own and launch adventure expeditions.

Vehicle Requirements

Any reliable 4-Wheel Drive SUV, SUT or trucks with:

2-speed transfer case
Frame-mounted recovery points
Full-size spare tire
Full tank of gas
Seat belts for all passengers
Vehicle in excellent working condition, no fluid leaks

Course Objectives

By the end of this one-day course, you will be able to:

Give a brief description of how the power train of 4-Wheel Drive vehicle moves it off-road.
Identify the two important elements every 4-Wheel Drive vehicle needs to perform off-road.
Identify the type of 4-Wheel Drive vehicle you own, list its various strengths and weaknesses to understand its limitations.
Safely drive your 4-Wheel Drive vehicle on the pavement.
List important safety items needed when off-roading alone, with multiple vehicles and in different environments.
Properly pack your vehicle for safe off-road driving.
Appropriately prepare your vehicle for off-road driving.
Shift your vehicle into 4-Wheel Drive - both high and low gears (if applicable).
Determine when to shift your vehicle into 4-Wheel Drive, both high and low gears.
Recite the single sentence that sums up the art of off-road driving.
State the seven basic requirements for environmentally friendly off-road exploring.
Outline seven basic points of neighborly trail etiquette.
Drive safely and successfully on dirt roads.
Drive safely and successfully over rocks.
Drive safely and successfully uphill and downhill.
Drive safely and successfully in mud.*
Drive safely and successfully over streams.*
Drive safely and successfully over snow and ice.*
Prepare your vehicle for pavement driving after completing an off-road adventure.
Complete the five-step vehicle safety check after completing an off-road adventure.

* Obviously these objectives cannot be practiced when certain environmental conditions are not available at an off-roading venue, National Park or National Forest.
